SPRINGFIELD, Ma. – Construction on what is being called a “world-class” sports complex in Springfield, Ma., is underway.

As reported by westernmassnews.com, the complex will be located behind the Duggan Academy in the city and will be the second sports complex in the area.

According to its website, Duggan Academy is an “xpeditionary learning (EL) through social justice magnet” school for students in grades 6 to 12.

The article states the complex will include the 1,800-seat Ted Plumb Field and Duggan Park, named after the former Putnam coach.

Peter Garvey, the city’s director of capital asset construction, said in the article the new facilities would “basically replicate” the Springfield Central Sports Complex.

The $14-million project, which broke ground in mid-March, will also include a turf football field, running track, lights, bleachers, restrooms, and a concession stand. The complex will host sports such as football, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, and track and field events.

“We’ll be able to attract everyone from western Massachusetts as far track meets, and it will meet all of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association guidelines,” Garvey says.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno says the project will “benefit our community and enhance the quality of life for our neighborhoods.”

With this being the first phase of the project, only the football fields and running track will be available this fall. Phase two is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2024 and the third and final phase the next year.
