SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Ground has broken on the Scheels Sports Park at Legacy Pointe in Springfield, Ill.
Ceremonial shovels turned over dirt on Sept. 20, marking the start of construction on the $67 million sports complex.
As reported by IllinoisTimes.com, almost 300 people attended the ceremony. At the event, Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher said the new facility “puts Springfield on the map for sports tourism.”
According to the article, local officials expect about 250,000 people to visit the sports complex in its first year. Attendance is expected to grow 10 to 15 percent per year after that. It is expected to be used by the local school district and other youth sports organizations.
The complex will include turf fields for soccer, softball, rugby, lacrosse, football, and baseball, while a 190,000-square-foot domed structure will have eight basketball courts, 16 volleyball courts, and turf training areas, the article states.
