CHICAGO, Ill.—Sports fans visiting the Windy City will soon have a new place to stay. Travel + Leisure Co. has announced plans to bring a Sports Illustrated Resort to downtown Chicago, transforming an existing hotel in the Loop into a dynamic destination inspired by the city’s legendary sports culture.
The project marks the third location for the growing Sports Illustrated Resorts brand, following previous announcements in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Nashville, Tennessee.
“Chicago is where legends are made,” says Geoff Richards, chief operating officer at Travel + Leisure Co. “With more than 40 championship trophies across 11 professional and college teams, this city breathes sports in a way few places can match, with a passion that runs through generations of fans. With this new resort, we’re creating a destination where that same championship spirit lives year-round, combining the rich storytelling tradition of Sports Illustrated with the unmatched energy that makes Chicago home to some of the world’s most devoted fans.”
The resort will be located just off Michigan Avenue along the Chicago River, placing guests in the heart of the city. The existing hotel will remain open during its transformation, which is expected to be completed by late 2026.
Once complete, the reimagined property will feature approximately 250 units, offering a mix of accommodations. The redesigned lobby will preserve the building’s original grand staircase—an homage to its past as a historic financial institution—while incorporating bold sports-themed design and Sports Illustrated imagery.
Planned amenities include an exclusive owner’s lounge, signature fitness center, and new food and beverage concepts such as a street-level coffee shop, full-service restaurant, and sports bar aimed at capturing the energy of game day in Chicago.
Rooted in the 70-year legacy of the Sports Illustrated brand, which has featured Chicago athletes on more than 100 magazine covers, the resort will offer flexible, points-based ownership options, with sales expected to begin in early 2026. Guests can experience a “preseason” preview of the resort beginning this winter.
