ROCKFORD, Mich. — After a downturn due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a busy 2021 season of baseball and softball at Rockford’s Meijer Sports Complex.

As reported by mlive, the West Michigan Sports Commission (WMSC), which owns and operates the complex, said 684 teams consisting of 8892 players participated in 25 tournaments from April to this month.

WSMC president Mike Guswiler called this past season a “terrific” one, noting they had 25 events with a 50 percent travel ratio.

Some of the other highlights of the reason reported by mlive include:

  • The number of tournaments was up from 15 in 2020 and even pre-pandemic levels in 2019 when there were 22 tournaments
  • Travel teams comprised 50 per cent of all teams playing in the 2021 season (342 out of 684), an increase from 27 per cent (124 out of 462) in 2020. Teams came from Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Ontario. The number of hotel rooms booked jumped 145 percent from 2433 in 2020 to 5973 this year.
  • Direct visitor spending increased 134 percent to $5.6 million in 2020, only eight percent below 2019 levels
  • Meijer Sports Complex hosted two national USA Softball tournaments, the USA Softball Men’s Open East Fast Pitch National Championship on August 27 to 29, and USA Softball Men’s Slow Pitch Class D National Championship on September 3 to 5. Collectively, these events hosted 372 participants and 600 spectators who booked 300 hotel rooms and contributed $500,000 in estimated direct spending.
