CARY, N.C. – The City of Cary and Wake County in North Carolina is pressing forward with plans for a massive new sports complex.
As reported by local TV station, CBS 17, the new complex would replace one at South Hills Mall.
“It would just be a big deal, and I think a lot of it would just put Cary even further on the map than it already is,” says Doug McRainey, director of community projects for Cary.
The plans came from a previous study which determined there was a lack of indoor sports facilities in the area. As reported, the concept for the complex includes 100,000 square feet of playable courts, conference rooms, and a multi-use esports arena.
As stated in the article, the property would also include a full-service restaurant and police district office.
Wake County has committed $35 million towards the project but a final cost has not been determined.
McRainey tells CBS 17 they are in the conceptual design phase with hopes of getting it approved by city council in September. According to the article, the goal is for the complex to open in 2027.
Consultations with the local community have taken place so far, including a group of students looking for a location to participate in robotics competitions.
