MIDLAND, Texas –  Plans are underway to develop a new sports facility in Midland, Texas, to be located near the Scharbauer Sports Complex.

As reported by The Midland Reporter-Telegram, the four acres of city-owned land have been leased out to the Midland Athletic Syndicate (MAS) for a 49-year term with an additional option of a 25-year extension. According to its website, MAS is a non-profit, with the mission “to foster and champion the growth of amateur athletics, teamwork, mental health, and sportsmanship among children and adults.”

The article states MAS recently released its plans for the 115,000-square-foot facility, which will be called the Diamondback Energy Athletic Complex. It is slated to include six full-size basketball courts (convertible into 12 full-size volleyball courts) and one indoor soccer area which can also be used as a multisport turf space. The facility will also have restrooms, lockers, concession areas, staff space, offices, spectator seating, and space for meetings and education sessions.

The Reporter-Telegram article states the project will cost an estimated $35 million, with an additional $3 million endowment fund to support future maintenance and operational needs.
