ERIE, Pa.—Erie will host the United States Canine Scent Sports (USCSS) Scentwork Trial this Saturday, drawing dogs and handlers from across the region to compete in scent detection challenges.

The trial begins at 9 a.m. at Trinity Global Methodist Church, 3952 Pine Ave., and will feature dogs of all breeds and skill levels, provided they are more than six months old. Up to 30 teams from Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio are expected to participate.

Competitors will take part in the Classic Trial, a series of four scent detection elements: Interior, Exterior, Vehicle, and Container. Dogs that qualify in all four elements will earn a Classic title at their respective competition level: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, or Senior. In addition to the standard trial, the event will include a game called “Copy Cat,” which challenges dogs to work independently of their handlers.

“Canine scent sports are an incredible way to showcase the intelligence and teamwork between dogs and handlers,” says Katara Peters, a certified trainer through the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors and a judge for both USCSS and the United Kennel Club. “We’re excited to bring this trial to Erie and allow the community to experience the excitement firsthand.”

The event is open to the public. For more information about the USCSS, visit uscaninescentsports.com/about/.
