LINCOLN,  Neb. – When 92,003 fans crowded into Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Neb., it was a record-breaking event.

The massive crowd was on hand to witness a women’s volleyball game between Nebraska and Omaha—breaking the world record for a women’s sporting event, previously held by an April 2022 Champions League match between FC Barcelona and Wolfsburg. The game was preceded by a Division II exhibition between Wayne State and Nebraska-Kearney. The doubleheader was part of “Volleyball Day is Nebraska.”

The previous crowd record in the United States was 90,185 for the 1999 Women’s World Cup final between the USA and China at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. According to an article from NCAA.com, the previous record attendance for women’s volleyball was 18,755.

Overall, the 92,003 fans for volleyball ranks third among the NCAA’s 24 sports, behind football 156,000 and hockey 113,000.
