NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – A newly opened sports complex in North Charleston, S.C., has brought back the lost art of roller skating.
The Post and Courier reported that the North Charleston Sports Complex includes an outdoor roller-skating rink. The last rink in the city closed in 2022. According to the article, the rink will support several special events as well as roller derby, roller hockey, and dancing.
The new sports complex was built on the former site of the Danny Jones Recreation Center. That center had an outdoor skating rink, but it was in a state of disrepair, local recreation director TJ Rostin told The Post and Courier. The Danny Jones Recreation Center served the community for 50-plus years, and Rostin says he hopes as many memories are made at the new sports complex as the older building.
The $25 million project includes a 25-yard competitive pool to complement the North Charleston Aquatic Center in Dorchester County; a gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and a myriad of other indoor athletics; five new tennis courts to meet the official United States Tennis Association standards; and a multi-purpose field to meet the growing demands of youth athletics.
The North Charleston Sports Complex officially opened on March 28.
