CHULA VISTA, Calif.  – A proposed soccer stadium in the San Diego area would be the largest in the United States if built.

As reported by local television station, CBS 8, an investment group called Petra Development plans to develop what is being called “a massive sports and entertainment complex.”

With a price tag of $2.5 billion, it would include a new stadium for a potential Major League Soccer (MLS) team with a built-in hotel, an athletic training center, youth league practice fields, restaurants, and retail stores.

Frederick McDonald, CEO and managing member of Petra Development, told CBS 8 that while he acknowledges the proposal is “ambitious,” the group is committing the resources and time needed to make it happen.

According to the article, McDonald believes MLS would be an ideal partner for the stadium, but they are also exploring options with other sports organizations.

Taking San Diego’s proximity to the border into consideration, it is expected the stadium would draw visitors from Mexico as well.

The proposed site for the stadium was formerly a power plant and is located near the Gaylor Pacific Resort Hotel and Convention Center, which is under construction.
