2019 Hempel World Cup Series Heads to Miami

Miami — For 30 years, Biscayne Bay and Miami have been an important stop of the Olympic-class circuit. This year 650 athletes from 60 countries are heading to the area for the opening series of the 2019 Hempel World Cup, a crucial milestone to the 2020 Olympic Regatta in Enoshima, Japan.

The Hempel World Cup series begins Jan. 29 with the top 10 athletes or teams in each class advancing to the double-points medal race on Saturday, Feb. 2 or Sunday, Feb. 3 for the limited country berths in each of the 10 classes in preparation for the respective country’s Olympic qualifying. Each nation can send one athlete or team per class.

Medal races will be streamed live to a Jumbotron in Regatta Park while festivities including food trucks and the US Sailing Education Zone attracts fans and families for the festival.

The event will be based out of Regatta Park and Coconut Grove Sailing Club.

The Hempel Cup regatta is a qualifier for the 2019 Pan American Games that will take place July 26 – Aug. 11 in Lima, Peru.

Each American sailor and team that places in the top 10 in their respective fleets in the regatta will represent the country as a member of the US Sailing Team.

The medal races on February 2-3 will be streamed live on World Sailing’s Facebook and YouTube Channels.
