DETROIT, Mich. – Ground has broken on a large, new indoor sports complex in Detroit’s Chandler Park.
As reported by ClickOnDetroit.com, the 130,000-square-foot building, known as the Chandler Park Fieldhouse, will offer soccer and several other sports. The groundbreaking ceremony was supported by $14 million through the White House Rescue Plan Act.
In the article, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says other local communities have long had such amenities, and he has wondered when Detroit would “get that kind of facility.”
Dennis Phillips, a resident who is involved with the Reach Youth program, says it will be a “great facility” that is exactly what the neighborhood needs.
According to a December news release from the City of Detroit, key features of the Chandler Park Fieldhouse include:
- Multiuse court for basketball, volleyball, and pickleball
- Football field and track for comprehensive sports offerings
- Multipurpose rooms for diverse activities
- Administrative spaces
- Shower rooms and inclusive bathrooms
- A 200-plus space parking lot with bio-swales for sustainable storm-water management
The park already offers a golf course, aquatic center, tennis courts, softball fields, walking paths, gardens, a fitness zone, and basketball courts.
