AUSTIN, Tex. The University of Texas Austin basketball arena and events center will be named the Moody Center after a $130-million grant from the Moody Foundation.

It is scheduled to open in 2022 with a groundbreaking in December, and will replace the 42-year-old Frank C. Erwin Jr. Center.

UT Austin’s 10,000-seat arena is designed to expand to 15,000 seats for concerts and shows, and will also be used for university, campus, community and high school events.

The grant is the largest from a foundation in Texas’ history. The Galveston-based foundation earlier contributed $50 million for the Moody College of Communication and $20 million for the Blanton Museum of Art.
