GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The Professional Pickleball Association’s Challenger Series will make its Michigan debut Sept. 18-20, bringing hundreds of amateur and professional pickleball players to the new courts at the Meijer Sports Complex in Rockford, Mich.
The Grand Rapids PPA Challenger will bring together seasoned amateurs, aspiring professionals, and established pro players competing for PPA points, medals, and prize money. The event is expected to showcase the depth of Michigan’s growing competitive pickleball community while introducing the PPA Challenger Series to the state for the first time. Among the professional competitors will be Major League Pickleball players and Carvana PPA Tour medalists, as well as players looking to advance into the professional ranks. Hundreds of amateur players, many from Michigan, are also registered to compete.
“The pickleball scene in Michigan is incredibly passionate, making this tour stop one we’ve been excited about for a long time,” says Tanner Groff, vice president of the PPA Challenger Series. “This is our first PPA Challenger in Michigan, and if the success of the iconic Beer City Open is any indication, we will see a passionate and lively crowd of fans and athletes at the Meijer Sports Complex this month.”
Hosted by the West Michigan Sports Commission with support from the Rockford Pickleball Club, the tournament will be the first traveling event to use the recently opened pickleball courts at the Meijer Sports Complex.
The new facility adds another competitive venue to the West Michigan sports landscape, while the tournament provides an opportunity to attract athletes and spectators from throughout the region.
“Grand Rapids is a hotbed for pickleball, evidenced by our sell-out local tournaments and premier venues,” says West Michigan Sports Commission president Mike Guswiler. “We’re the perfect location to host the first PPA Challenger Series in Michigan, and we can’t wait to show off our new courts to the broader pickleball community.”
The Grand Rapids PPA Challenger is part of the PPA Challenger Series, which gives amateur and aspiring professional players opportunities to compete in organized PPA events alongside established professionals. The Sept. 18-20 tournament will also give fans an opportunity to watch players across multiple levels of competition at the same venue.
For sports event organizers, the tournament highlights the continued growth of pickleball as a competitive event category and Grand Rapids’ ability to host tournaments at newly developed sports facilities.
