MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. – The Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority (AZSTA) has handed out a record $5.2 million in grants to almost 40 sports organizations in the Greater Phoenix Area.

As reported by The City Sun Times, the grants will support youth and amateur sports programs in 12 communities in the Phoenix area, including Glendale, Scottsdale, and Mesa.

According to the article, since 2001, the AZSTA has provided $32 million to support 600 projects in Maricopa County through its grants.

AZSTA board chair Teddy Enyon says his organization is proud to “support these worthy non-profits as they enhance the lives of people across Maricopa County.”

To receive grants, organizations needed to demonstrate financial need and a benefit to the local community, among other factors. Priority is given to youth recreational facilities close to public schools, the article states.

Kim Sabow, chair of AZSTA’s youth and amateur sports committee says it is an “honor” to support so many “exemplary non-profit organizations, schools, and municipalities.”

The AZSTA also is responsible for owning and operating State Farm Stadium, founding tourism promotion, and constructing and renovating facilities for MLB’s Cactus League Spring Training.
