Destination Showcase: Pearland, Texas

New Home to Texas State Games and New Sporting Facilities

Pearland, Texas, has added several new sports facilities during the past two years, with additional fields and improvements expected early 2018 in time for spring league play.

With the Sports Complex at Shadow Creek Ranch providing a perfect setting for regional tournaments in softball, baseball, soccer and volleyball and the Hickory Slough Sportsplex offering multipurpose and lighted fields for lacrosse and soccer, new fields and facilities are already attracting outside attention. Phase II construction on Centennial Park to upgrade soccer fields, softball fields and amenities, will allow the city to expand its offering to host even more sporting events for recreational leagues as well as regional tournaments.

Pearland also offers a variety of indoor facilities for basketball, gymnastics, powerlifting, swimming, water polo, pickleball and other sports in venues in local schools, indoor recreational facilities, hotels and other spaces.

In January 12-14, 2018, Pearland will host the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) Winter Games of Texas 2018 and 2019, with the prestigious sports festival drawing athletes and fans to watch 15 individual and team sports competitions in the Olympic-style medal event. The 2018-2019 Winter Games will feature archery, basketball, football, golf, gymnastics, kickball, lacrosse, martial arts, pickleball, powerlifting, soccer, softball swimming, tennis and wheelchair rugby taking place in various venues across the city. The Texas games hosted by both the Pearland Convention and Visitors Bureau and the City of Pearland will debut after a 12-year run in Frisco for the city-wide event.

In a prime location only 10 minutes from Houston’s Hobby Airport and downtown Houston, the options for dining, attractions and easy access to Pearland make it a favorite destination for traveling teams. But the city has enough hotel rooms in the 11 brand-name properties and enough dining options with 140 eating establishments to ensure players, coaches and families have plenty to keep them busy between games. With more than 80,000 square feet of venue space city-wide, groups can create memorable experiences at local breweries, golf courses, parks or throughout town to please sports groups.

In all, Pearland offers more than 175 acres of park lands, walking, hiking, jogging and biking trails and plenty of splash pads, tennis courts, basketball courts and places to picnic or relax to give sports enthusiasts and spectators plenty of ways to burn off calories after indulging at one of the famous restaurants or to just relax after a long day.

While in Pearland, look for the Pear-Scape Trail, an attraction envisioned by the Pearland Convention and Visitors Bureau that features four-foot fiberglass pears painted by local artists positioned throughout the city near area attractions, in the town center and near parks that both residents and visitors enjoy seeing.
