DURHAM, N.C. – The push is on to bring a massive sports complex to Durham, N.C.
As reported by local TV station abc11.com, Discover Durham is advocating for the development of a multi-sport complex in the city.
In the article, Discover Durham president and CEO Susan Amey says the city doesn’t have as many facilities in comparison to other communities of its size.
Under the proposal, the complex is envisioned to include a 250,000-square-foot indoor building for a track, basketball and volleyball courts, and seating for 5,000. Another indoor building would be 38,500 square feet and include more courts. The outside portion of the complex would feature eight baseball and softball fields and four multi-purpose fields.
According to the article, several residents spoke in favor of the idea, including Robert Saunders, who founded AAU Brotherhood Basketball in Durham.
He noted how other cities in the state, such as Charlotte and Raleigh, have sports complexes.
During a presentation to the local city council, organizers predicted the complex could be profitable in its third year and bring more than $35 million in economic impact to the area.
