Little League International Announces Leadership Transition
During Gilmour’s tenure, Little League established the Little League Grow the Game Grant program, which is focused on growing the game of baseball and softball, assisting local leagues with new opportunities in their communities, and supporting leagues impacted b natural disasters. It also included expanding the Little League program in Australia and throughout Europe and broadening the television and internet coverage for Little League International Tournaments through ESPN and CBS Sports.
A partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB) that included the establishment of the MLB Little League Classic was created in addition to the celebration of Little League International’s 75th Anniversary and the 26th Little League International Congress in Minneapolis.
Tanner will assume the duties of chairman and Steven P. Johnson of Williamsport was appointed as chairman-elect. It was also announced at the conclusion of the meeting that Little League International Board of Directors member and world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James Andrews of Gulf Breeze, Fla., will depart the board. Dr. Andrews is the founder and medical director of the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) in Birmingham, Ala., and Andrews was instrumental in the establishment of Little League’s pitch count rules in 2005 and pitching arm safety measures over the last decade, according to the news announcement.
