MLK Kickoff Classic Volleyball Tournament Welcomed Thousands to York County

YORK, Pa. — The Martin Luther King Kickoff Classic Volleyball Tournament returned for its eighth year to York County, bringing thousands of athletes and spectators to the area.

            Hundreds of teams including high school female athletes from across the East Coast, Midwest, Puerto Rico and Canada competed in the event that spread across Lancaster and York counties, including the York Expo Center’s Arena where 200 teams competed. More than 1,000 additional athletes competed in this year’s tournament over last year.

            The tournament generated more than $6 million in economic benefits for the community, which was almost $2 million more than last year’s event, according to Pennsylvania Sports.

            The MLK Classic began in Philadelphia in 1995 and moved to Lancaster County in 2012 to include York County, according to Chrissy Tobias with Explore York.
