MESA, Ariz. — Visit Mesa announced the return of field sports with the Las Vegas Senior Softball Association (LVSSA) and Senior Softball USA (SSUSA) World Master’s Championship (WMC). The competition will be held Oct. 29 — Nov. 1 at three Mesa park venues, including the Red Mountain Softball Complex, Skyline Softball Complex and the newest fields at the Eastmark Sports Complex.
Visit Mesa partnered with Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities to secure the tournament that will host the men’s and women’s 50s category.
More than 1,500 softball athletes and more than 100 teams are expected to compete Halloween weekend on Mesa fields.
“We’ve been patient for the return of competition sports in Mesa,” said Visit Mesa Director of Sports Sales Suzanne Cecil. “The weather is going to be incredible and we have a strong appetite for team sports in our city, especially as we approach the cooler months and are able to enjoy time outdoors.”
The tournament has selected Holiday Inn & Suites Phoenix-Mesa/Chandler as the host hotel and the event will use three additional Mesa hotels over the tournament weekend. The estimated director visitor spending is expected to be $435,000. Visitors are vital to Mesa’s economy and enhance the quality of life for Mesa’s half-a-million residents, according to Visit Mesa.
Longwoods International reports that Mesa attracts 4.5 million visitors each year. In 2019, visit spending in Mesa was climbing to record levels. The latest data shows that Mesa visitors spent $486 million in day-trip visits and overnight stays.
“We are lucky to be able to find an area with enough good fields anytime in October,” said Fran Dowell, SSUSA executive director.
The four-session of the World Masters Championships will feature all 50 men’s and women’s divisions and will be in Mesa and Glendale, Ariz.
