WICHITA, Kan.—U.S. Figure Skating has selected Wichita, Kansas, to host the 2027 Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championship, returning one of the sport’s top qualifying events to the city.

The competition, scheduled for Jan. 20–23, 2027, will be hosted by Visit Wichita in partnership with the Wichita Figure Skating Club. Events and official practices will take place at INTRUST Bank Arena, with additional practices held at the Wichita Ice Center.

“Wichita continues to be a fantastic partner of U.S. Figure Skating, and we are excited to award the Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships to Wichita once again,” says Bob Dunlop, senior director of events at U.S. Figure Skating. “The city’s facilities, combined with the local expertise led by Visit Wichita and the Wichita Figure Skating Club, have proven to be an outstanding destination for our athletes, coaches, and fans.”

Organizers expect more than 1,800 athletes to attend, along with coaches, officials, and spectators. The event is projected to generate more than $1.7 million in local economic impact through spending on hotels, dining, transportation, and attractions.

Wichita has hosted multiple figure skating events in recent years, including the 2025 U.S. Skating Championships, the 2024 Midwestern Synchronized Sectional Championship, and other sectional competitions in 2018 and 2020, as well as the National Theatre on Ice competition in 2022.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to once again welcome the synchronized skating community back to Wichita,” says Josh Howell, vice president of sports development at Visit Wichita. “Hosting this event again speaks to the strength of our partnership with U.S. Figure Skating, the quality of our facilities like INTRUST Bank Arena and the Wichita Ice Center, and the dedication of the Wichita Figure Skating Club. Events like this bring thousands of athletes and visitors to Wichita and create meaningful economic impact for our community.”

“An event like this is a great reminder of how important ice sports are to our city and our community,” says Sean O’Reilly, general manager of the Wichita Ice Center. “We are seeing so many more people become interested in learning how to skate following the Olympics, and we hope that even more are inspired by the amazing skating they’ll see at this competition.” Local support for the event will be provided by Visit Wichita, the Wichita Figure Skating Club, and community volunteers.
