VALLEY FORGE, Pa.—
More than 1,300 athletes and coaches are expected to compete in USA Taekwondo’s American Open East tournament next weekend in Montgomery County, marking a 29 percent increase in participation from the previous year.

The event, hosted in Valley Forge near King of Prussia from May 29-31, continues to grow as one of the sport’s premier national competitions.

Competitors from across the country will travel to the Greater Philadelphia region to participate in the tournament, which features competition across multiple age divisions and skill levels.

Organizers said the growth reflects increasing national participation in taekwondo and rising demand for high-level competition opportunities.

“This growth reflects the expanding passion for taekwondo across the United States and the commitment of our community to excellence, sportsmanship, and development at every level,” says event director Christy Simmons. “Events like this not only elevate competition but also strengthen the foundation of our sport for future generations.”

“The American Open East is no longer a new event,” says USA Taekwondo CEO Steve McNally. “It’s established, it’s growing, and it belongs on every serious competitor’s calendar. If we’re going to achieve our goal of being competitive across all age categories on the world stage, we have to give our athletes the quality competition opportunities they need to develop. Events like this one are exactly how we build that foundation.”

USA Taekwondo said the American Open East is part of its broader effort to expand competitive opportunities nationwide and support long-term athlete development ahead of future international competition.
