I arrived in Grand Marais, Michigan the day before the Great Lakes Sea Kayaking Symposium (7/16 – 7/19) was to take place in the town’s beautiful bay on Lake Superior – trailers full of kayaks and cars with kayaks tied to the top were all pulling into this quaint little town and campers had already filled the city’s park along the lake.
I learned that sea kayaks, which are longer and have pointed ends, with spray skirts, are necessary for the big lakes, which can get rough with short notice.
The Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium is the oldest kayaking symposium on the Great Lakes and is held every July in Grand Marais’ protected harbor, which is ideal for class sessions and skills practice while offering a perfect starting point for unforgettable trips along the scenic Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore. Courses are open for all ages groups, including young kayak enthusiasts.
