The winter blues are no joke.
In addition to lower levels of vitamin D (thanks to lack of sunshine), colds and flus, and icy roads in parts of the country, many Americans face seasonal drops in their mood. According to Scientific American, as many as five percent of Americans suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
SAD is characterized by feelings of hopelessness, lack of enjoyment of favorite activities, and a general lack of energy. Studies suggest as much as 40 percent of Americans report one or more of these symptoms in winter months, even if they don’t meet the threshold for a SAD diagnosis.
There is good news, however.
As it turns out, sports might be an effective treatment for mood disorders. One study from Systematic Reviews Journal concluded, “participation in sport (community and elite) is related to better mental health, including improved psychological well-being…”
This study also found that adults participating in team sports saw the most beneficial effects as opposed to those who only participate in solo sports.
Next time the winter blues hit, maybe get some friends together and play your favorite winter sport. The science says it’ll give your mental wellness a healthy boost.
