An award-winning health tech company says a recent study shows how data from their game-based technology can improve rehabilitation for those diagnosed with a concussion.

Highmark Interactive says the study demonstrates how their EQ Brain Performance (EQ) measures deficits in balance that result from a concussion. This gives medical professionals a quantifiable way of “differentiating between healthy individuals and those with poor balance that is often associated with concussion, thereby providing rehabilitation guidance on the path to recovery,” the company said in a press release.

EQ is the world’s first FDA-cleared, gamified, mobile neurological assessment tool. Highmark says the technology improves on conventional evaluations that rely on the comparison of current performance to a single point in the past. Instead, EQ technology allows patients to have their brain’s performance evaluated over time, “representing the individual as a ‘movie’ and not just a static picture,” Highmark said.

Seventy subjects were recruited from sports medicine clinics to take part in the study. Thirty-one of the participants had no history of concussion while 39 had a clinical concussion diagnosis, verified by an FRCPC sports medicine practitioner.

The software gives clinicians a data-driven diagnosis of concussion, allowing care givers to incorporate symptom-specific treatment for concussed individuals.
